Community News & Events
This month, we have various updates, including news from our new Special Interest Groups, plans for RSECon25 and some blogs from the community.
Celebrating 10 Years of Research IT at the University of Manchester
The Research IT team at the University of Manchester are celebrating their 10th birthday this year! The RIT Team consists of the Research Platforms team and the Research Software Engineering team – one of the largest in the UK. To commemorate this milestone, they have created a special video featuring colleagues from Research IT and the wider University, reflecting on the past ten years and looking ahead to the future.
- Read more about it in this blog post.
Nordic RSE 2025 Wrap-up
Michael Dales attended the Nordic-RSE 2025 conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, which was excellent, and wrote up a summary of the presentations to share what went on.
- Read more in Michael’s blog post.
Focus on Green RSE at RSCon25
The Green RSE Special Interest Group (SIG) is hosting a Birds of a Feather community session on Green RSE RSECon25 – and we’d love your input!
We’re on the lookout for suggestions of speakers who are doing great work in sustainable research software, especially those who might not usually take the spotlight. This session aims to showcase a broad range of activities and share experiences that matter to the Green RSE community.
Whether it’s energy-efficient computing, sustainable practices in your team, or new training courses – we want to hear about it!
Got a speaker suggestion or something to share? Let us know!
- Check out the Green RSE SIG on LinkedIn.
- Email [email protected]
New Green RSE Award Recognises Sustainability in Research Software
The Green RSE Special Interest Group is also proud to launch the Green RSE Award, sponsored by the Software Sustainability Institute and debuting at RSECon25. This award recognises individuals in the Research Software Engineering community who are making important contributions to environmental sustainability in research software. Whether through energy-efficient coding, sustainable infrastructure choices, or advocacy for greener digital research practices, the Green RSE Award aims to shine a light on “Green” work that often goes unseen.
Nominations are open to all members of the RSE community and will be judged on: Environmental Impact, Creativity, Openness and Community Influence. The winner will be announced at the RSECon25 Awards Ceremony.
- Nominate someone using this short form.
We hope this initiative will inspire greater awareness and action around sustainability in research software.
Geoscience SIG at RSECon25
Do you work in weather, climate, oceanography, earth science, planetary physics or space-weather? Do you have interesting research or tools you would like to share?
The Geoscience SIG has its inaugural meeting at RSECon25. We’re organising a BoF session on Tuesday with keynote speakers (from NCAS and NERC), lightning talks, and breakout groups for discussion. Everyone is welcome, whether you consider yourself a geoscientist or you just want to find out more.
We’re looking for speakers for the lightning talks, as we are very keen to allow the community to present their work.
- You can apply to give a talk using this Google form.
In other news, we are pleased to announce that Helen Burns is the newly elected Chair of the SIG, and Isabel Fenton is the Deputy. You can still get involved in helping run the group – contact us through Slack if you are interested.
Fortran SIG Moves to the RSE Society
The BCS Fortran SIG (https://fortran.bcs.org/) has been in existence since 1970 and has been a UK & Ireland focal point for the discussion of the Fortran language and its standardisation ever since. After some 54 years, a proposal was made to migrate the BCS Fortran SIG to SocRSE as it has better representation of the Fortran community and its membership was already running Fortran related events. It clearly made sense to make this change and we are delighted to report that the SocRSE has agreed to this.
We are planning on holding a ‘Reboot’ session at the ‘Back to Future Fortran II’ workshop ( https://lu.ma/0086jtey) in September – a satellite event of RSECon 2025 – where the direction and activities of the newly homed SIG can be discussed. We are aiming to have an online AGM to decide the new committee about a month later and we encourage Fortran enthusiasts to nominate themselves.
We are hoping many of the existing committee members will stay on, at least for a while, to provide continuity and the benefits of organisational memory.
The other activity at the moment will be to migrate our historical documentation, all the way back to 1970, to a new website. Anyone interested in the new Fortran SIG is invited to subscribe to the Fortran channel in SocRSE’s Slack workspace.
- More info can be found on the new Fortran SIG webpage.
RSEEE International RSE Day 2025 online meetup
Thursday 9th October is this year’s International RSE Day! To celebrate, we are organising an online meetup of RSE East of England (RSEEE). This time, we thought it would be great to hear from groups of RSEs or those who do research software development across the East of England about what they do.
If you are part of a group, or even an individual, working on research software, and are willing to give a very brief overview (5-10 mins) of what you work on at our online meet-up on Thursday 9th October, please let us know at the link below.
- You can do so by filling in this form.
