The Society of Research Software Engineering is dedicated to building a community and raising awareness of the role of Research Software Engineers. We are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all of our members.
In order to support its members, volunteers, and Trustees in creating that environment, the Society requires that people with significant responsibility for Society activities complete an onboarding process. This includes:
- Trustees
- Working Group members
- Special Interest Group leaders and committee members
- Conference committee members
- Anyone who supervises or works with volunteers
- Anyone else the Trustees identify as needing to complete the training
The training should be completed every two years. If an individual completes the training for one role (for example, as a Trustee) they do not need to complete the training again should they begin another role that requires it (for example, joining the Conference committee).
Everyone should complete the following:
- Read the Organisation Code of Conduct
- Complete the free online EDI training on https://elearning.acas.org.uk/
- Bullying & Harassment
- Equality & Diversity
- Discipline & Grievance
- Building neuroinclusive workplaces
- Read the relevant Terms of Reference document for the activity you are participating in
- Read the Complaints and Grievances policy
In addition to the above, anyone working with volunteers should complete the following:
- Read the following articles on Involving Volunteers from the NCVO:
- Supporting Volunteers
- Equity, diversity and inclusion in volunteering
- Data protection and volunteers (or provide evidence of completing a UK-compliant data protection course through your work)
- Running a volunteer induction
- Solving volunteer problems
- Ending volunteering well
- Read the Volunteer policy
- Read Volunteering and healthy and safety
