The Fortran Specialist Group exists:
* To sustain an community for current and potential programmers of modern Fortran.
* To foster the modern Fortran language ecosystem through promoting awareness and by encouraging user training & ongoing CPD.
* To discuss the needs and feature requirements of future versions of the Fortran language standard.
* To encourage the development of the language in collaboration with national and international standardization bodies.
The group was originally founded in 1970 under the auspices of the British Computer Society (now the BCS) but it has migrated to a new host institution in 2025, as the Society of Research Software Engineering was deemed a better fit in the present era. We would like to thank the BCS for sustaining the group for 55 years and for the SocRSE for welcoming us.
The group has played a significant role in shaping the Fortran standards, with many well-known names serving on its committee such as Miles Ellis, John Reid, David Muxworthy and Chris Lazou. It will take a little while for the historical documents to be migrated from the BCS but they are a rich resource for those interested in the development of the language and the people that have shaped it.
We welcome members to serve on the committee particularly as officers as well as ordinary members.
Please use the Fortran channel of the RSE Slack instance to communicate with the membership and committee.
