PhD position: Developing and applying coupled particle and lattice algorithms for soft matter physics

The Institute for Computational Physics at the University of Stuttgart (Germany) is offering a PhD position tailored for a person with a keen interest in soft matter science as well as a passion for programming, algorithm development and research software. In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop, implement and apply simulation approaches that seamlessly combine particle-based and lattice-based methods using ESPResSo ( The focus of your work will revolve around the integration of techniques such as advanced lattice-Boltzmann schemes, diffusion-advection-reaction schemes and molecular dynamics. You will work on applications such as multi-component fluids, evaporation, sheared systems and non-Newtonian fluids. On the technical side, you will learn about automated code generation, parallel processing and deploying simulation workflows in HPC environments.

Your tasks

  • Developing and implementing schemes coupling particle and lattice-based approaches such as the lattice-Boltzmann method, finite volume based diffusion-advection-reaction equations and molecular dynamics
  • Applying these algorithms for research in soft matter science
  • Publish both, on algorithms and their applications
  • Contributing to the open-source simulation software ESPResSo, its documentation, and the continuous integration tooling, also beyond the immediate context of your research

Your qualifications

  • A strong interest in soft matter and simulations as well as algorithm and software development
  • An MSc in physics or a related discipline
  • Proven experience in C++, experience in CUDA and Python are an asset
  • Proven experience in numerical work such as simulations
  • The willingness to engage with an interdisciplinary research community as well as with users and developers of the ESPResSo software package
  • The ability to pursue complex projects both, in teams and independently
